Problem

I never answer calls from a number that I don’t know. If it’s important they’ll leave a message. I have this one caller that calls me everyday and never leaves a message. I’m thinking it’s an automated call. How do I prevent the caller from interrupting me on a daily basis?

A Solution

Capitalisation Matters

Posted in frockuporfrockoff.wordpress.com - 353 d 9 h

Another day, another task to complete. Today, I used FileZilla to FTP to the Curtin server and download a file. FTP, like Telnet, is a way of remotely accessing a computer or server. It is very simple to do with you simply needing to enter in the domain name or IP address and then user name and password if required and BAM, you’re connected and can view the directory structure. The prize for completing this task was the simple, yet very important piece of advice - CAPITALISATION MATTERS.

Windows 7 - Use Case Scenario

Posted in netcodger.wordpress.com - 396 d 14 h

As with my openSUSE use case scenario testing, my next step with Windows 7 beta is to transcode a DVD for use on the iPod Touch.

I inserted the DVD into my laptop and Windows Media Player popped up and asked me a couple of first use configuration questions. A couple of clicks later, the DVD was whirring to life and this message popped up.

Effects Progress

Posted in MixxxNews - 452 d 8 h

Since the 1.6.1 release, we've been hard at work integrating several new features that have been in the works for a while.

In our last user survey, many people told us that Mixxx needed some effects besides the flanger. In response to your feedback, we had Pawel Bartkiewicz work on LADSPA integration through Google Summer of Code in 2007. LADSPA is a terribly misleading acronym for "Linux Audio Developers Simple Plugin API". As it turns out, LADSPA isn't just for Linux - it's a cross-platform effects plugin framework, and that made it the natural choice for us. Pawel did great work last Summer, but it came in middle of our 1.6.0 development cycle and in order to properly integrate his work into Mixxx, several other tasks needed to be completed first.

One of these more noticeable tasks has been to create a new tabbed view, where both the library and effects pane can be managed.

Brasero vs K3B: CD Burning in Linux

Posted in alternativenayk.wordpress.com - 587 d 21 h

In this site I have not hidden my preference for KDE over GNOME, and also my preference for K3B. However, for K3B my comparison was mainly Nero or GNOME’s older default burning application. With Ubuntu 8 point whatever, and thus also in Linux Mint 5 (which I am currently using in one of my computers) came the Ubuntu CD Burner Brasero. And I was keen to see how it worked. Here’s a brief comparison through a real-life incident: (note I’m using Linux Mint 5 (Elyssa I think) here which has GNOME, but I’ve loaded some key KDE applications including K3B).

Red Planet Clenchy Buttocks Time

Red Planet announcement “any day now, possibly sooner” sez Mr Stack.

It’s like waiting for the arrival of a baby and not being sure who the father is.

I suppose. Is it okay to use analogies that one hasn’t had personal experience of?

Yes, of course it is.

Okay, it’s like watching a shark swim towards you and not knowing whether it’s going to bite your leg off or sell you timeshares.

No, no, it’s like watching a brand new BBC sitcom and not knowing whether it’s going to be really sodding awful or utterly brilliant.

No, hang on, it’s like diving off the 10 metre board and not knowing whether your speedos are going to stay on when you hit the water.

No, wait a minute, it’s like dressing up as a gorilla and jumping on the bar in an East End pub and not knowing whether you’re going to get applause or bottled.

No, it’s more like

Steaming pile of Linux instant messengers

I want a proper IRC client in the form of a multi-protocol instant messenger.

Wireshark Filters

Posted in codeghar.wordpress.com - 339 d 16 h

Wireshark or Ethereal traces can be filtered to show exactly what you need. Their website has an awesome Display Filter Reference but sometimes it isn’t very clear on how to use them. This post aims to provide a handful of filters and how to use them.

Filter a SIP Trace by Call ID

You might want to filter a trace when you know the Call ID of a call. You may do it the following way:

sip.Call-ID contains 2211178-3446291419-730335

where 2211178-3446291419-730335 is the Call ID. Some Call IDs may contain other characters which Wireshark may not like (visible by the color of the filter field) so you may have to play with it a bit to get a unique string to look for but something which contains only characters that are “valid”.

How do you get a Call ID? Well, you would have to look through the first INVITE message to get this piece of information.

Windows XP p2v conversion with KVM

Posted in blog.khax.net - 376 d 2 h

After all of the Windows and Linux virtual machines I have setup I decided to try a Windows p2v (Physical to Virtual) conversion. After bracing for the worst it ended up being fairly straight forward. Steps as follows:

  1. Create a disk image of sufficient size
  2. Copy the Windows HDD to the disk image
  3. Boot the image with KVM

Yip. Only three steps. Beware that Windows p2v images have all run quite slow for me compared to Windows images that were originally installed in KVM. This I guess is just because of the cruft buildup in Windows and all the driver changes that Windows seems to balk at so much.

REVIEW: CHILDSPLAY - An educational suite for younger people.

Posted in openbytes.wordpress.com - 432 d 12 h

sm2-mainIts been a while since we took a look at a review.    We’ve all been very busy laughing and exposing Microsoft, its shown in the hits aswel, because in oct/nov I was averaging 28 hits a day :( and for December we are looking at 80+ :)

Its clear to me (especially after the kind emails Ive recieved) that Lord of the Shills (LOTS) is popular.  An internet stalker tried to imply we take it very seriously, we dont, its a tongue in cheek way of exposing the pro MS liars.  A little comedy with a serious message.

Oh, where was I? Yep on to the review.
