Posted in redwineandsleepingpills.wordpress.com - 58 d 19 h

I risk to state the obvious, but here it goes: if you are trying to compile MySQL in order to be able to build the recent versions of Amarok, do not forget to configure the former –with-embedded-server support (run configure –help in the source directory to see all the options).

Giving back to and through Valley arts organizations

Depending on which holiday/s you celebrate, you may find family traditions such as gift-giving sneaking up on you all too quickly. A couple of things to remember as you search for ways to create special holiday experiences…

First, attending performances together with family and friends can yield the greatest gift of all: memories.

Second, every gift matters–and seemingly small actions taken by a multitude of people can have a huge impact.

“Never doubt,” reflected American cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead (1901-1978), “that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

My favourite softwares

Posted in tailrace.wordpress.com - 59 d 12 h

I am a born again software addict. My rebound from terminal software nutcase to sane user has been excruciating. The phenomenal obsession with shareware, trial ware, demo ware and freeware has since been toned down to occasional browsing for useful freeware. However, I have been able to compile a list of excellent applications while walking the wild side of cyberspace. Like a fairy tale dungeon dragon I have been guarding it all these years but I realize now that it has been damn tiresome and pretty stupid of me. So I have decided to bare it all – A Double Cheese Burger + Triple Sundae + Pepsi software combo pack of applications, mostly freeware and a few pay ware.

Well with the new year just around the corner it seems like everybody is producing a list of something. Debian rootfs installation customized for Bifferboard

Posted in blog.famzah.net - 92 d 9 h

First you have to mount a medium on which we are going to install the Debian system. Generally, you have two options:

  • Using a USB Flash drive:

    ## MAKE SURE THAT YOU UPDATE THIS
    $ export ROOTDEV=/dev/sdc1
    $ sudo mkfs.ext3 $ROOTDEV
    $ sudo tune2fs -c 0 -i 0 $ROOTDEV
    $ export MNTPOINT=/mnt/diskimage
    $ sudo mount $ROOTDEV $MNTPOINT

  • Using a Qemu image:

    $ export MNTPOINT=/mnt/diskimage
    $ export IMGFILE=hd0.img
    $ sudo mount -o loop,offset=32256 "$IMGFILE" $MNTPOINT

Once we have the medium mounted at $MNTPOINT, we can proceed with installing Debian there and configuring it for Bifferboard:

MPlayer - Thank God!

Posted in davidlee221.wordpress.com - 57 d 3 h

This little video player for OSX rocks. I can ALMOST forget how long it took both VLC and Quicktime to search and seek inside a video. All I remember was that it took about as long as humans to appear on the earth. Compared to MPlayer, (which I believe to be Mplayer’s best feature), which was instantaneous seeking. It rocks. Download it for osx. trust me.

Oh well, I needed to weed out my inbox anyway

Posted in scintillator.wordpress.com - 43 d 22 h

A word of advice to EEE users: If you’re in Advanced Desktop Mode, DO NOT upgrade all packages in Synaptic. (I know, if you don’t use an eee or some Linux system only 25% of the words in that sentence mean anything. I know.) Because it will cause your eee to go into a boot loop which you do not have sufficient knowledge to fix, even with a free morning and lots of googling, and you will have to restore your computer to factory settings and lose all the emails you’ve received in the past six weeks, including ones with audition dates and bookers’ emails and reference letters in them.

Because I really, really should have known better, this being about the 4th time I’ve done this exact thing, I’m not that pissed off. And my inbox was getting awfully full and unwieldly anyway, and I don’t need any reference letters right now. And the only audition I have coming up is on February 4. And I have that booker’s email address written down somewhere else.

I am excited to be part of the UCOSP initiative and look forward to working with Blake from Mozilla, Professor Greg and everyone else! See you all in January! (:
